  3. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:21 pm

@85cutz work down from above… 3 first… and then 1 and the go back to the 3 to blend the 3 and 1… see video called skip guard tapering… explains it all.

What is the doll head thing he is using

  8. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:26 pm

@Freemaccerz use #2 first… then taper bottom edge w 0, then go back and address any needed blending with a #1… rock the clipper to prevent lines. Ivan

  9. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:27 pm

@moneymae1 Yup… definitely serious! TY Ivan

  10. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:29 pm

You do NOT start form the bottom and fade up…that leaves steps and lines… do the 1.5 all over. Skip the 1A. Go lower with the 1. Go back to the 1A if needed to blend.
    Ivan

If you want to give someone a 4 all around would you give them the 4 on top first then do what you did?

  12. shudo64 on December 5, 2018 at 8:32 pm

How’s that work on the 1 1/2 all around cut when the hair is all ready cut low and you usually start from the bottom with a zero and fade up? please help

  13. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:35 pm

    @xmrYOUREwrong yes Ivan

  14. ivan zoot on December 5, 2018 at 8:36 pm

@tazboi81 sorry… not a real good answer here as every head is different… growth direction is like a fingerprint… unique. density and texture of hair creates options and variations as well… Ivan

I can taper etc without guards too but I can do a much faster job with them and let’s face it.  Time IS money.  I love that I have the ability and education to perform clipper cuts without a guard but I am also thankful for the add -ons that make our jobs more proficient.  This is how I learned to cut tapers and fades in cosmo school.  Barber School taught me how to cut without the use of guards but I still find that they come in handy at times.  Thanks for the lesson.  🙂

Hello Mr. Zoot, I am looking at interchangeable blade for clippers that offer a 3/8" or #3 as the starting blade. Now if I were to attach a 5/8 guard onto that would it clip at 1"? Add an 1" would it clip at 1 3/8" etc. Also big fan of the videos. It is helpful to those of us who may wish to become barbers. Haters will hate, it’s how you know your doing things right. -Lee

Thanks so much for this, its really helped me

  35. Carina Kirkland on December 5, 2018 at 8:58 pm

This video really helped me. I’m a woman that prefers to sport a short cut. I cut it myself and I do a pretty good job but I’ve always had a little trouble using the guards to fade. Allot of the other videos only show men and how to fade or taper to bald. That is not the look I’m going for. lol I was so happy to see this video. You really walked me through it and I’m happy with the results. God bless and keep doing what you do.

@eddie1815 There is a right way and a wrong way to use any tool. Guards have a place and a purpose. Please post your videos and send me the links. I will share your ideas, too. Ivan

Ah! See I tried cutting my own hair and I would notice that I got these lines where you could easily see that the hairlength was different! I knew it was a tapering problem but now I understand how to do it properly! Thank you so much 🙂

  45. datsyhoehoe on December 5, 2018 at 9:10 pm

I actually do this with the LONGEST clip first and keep getting shorter below where I just cut and it works just right. Of course you want to run your comb from bottom hairline to up and out to make sure there are no steps or missed hair, of which you would work out with clipper over comb or blending shears on longer hair.
