Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego on surge of Covid-19 cases in Arizona

Kate Gallego, mayor of Phoenix, joins “Closing Bell” to talk about the surge of coronavirus cases in Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Health reported nearly 3,600 additional Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, another record in additional daily cases, ahead of President Donald Trump’s scheduled appearances in the state later in the day.

Arizona is averaging about 2,500 daily new cases as of Monday, which is about a 94% increase since one week ago, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The coronavirus has infected 3,593 people and killed an additional 42 people in Arizona since Monday, bringing the states’ death toll to 1,384, according to the state’s health department.

While the rise in daily case numbers could reflect a lag in data reporting or increased testing in certain locations throughout the state, Arizona’s positivity rate has increased from 5% in early May to nearly 20% in June, according to the state’s health department. Its current positivity rate average stands at more than 10%.

The positivity rate indicates the percentage of tests that come back positive in a specific region. Epidemiologists say this number can indicate how broadly the virus is spreading throughout a community.

Another factor that is watched carefully is hopitalizations, which can indicate how severe cases are in an area. This data can lag the number of new cases.

Arizona hospitals have reported more patients in their hospital beds and intensive care units since mid-May when the state began to reopen. About 84% of the state’s ICU beds were in use as of Monday, up from 74% reported in use on Memorial Day.

The increase in cases and hospitalizations comes as Trump travels to the nation’s border with Mexico and to Phoenix, where he’s scheduled to attend a campaign rally at a local church. Infectious disease experts have warned against large indoor gatherings, such as Trump’s recent rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as cases surge in the West and South.

“We are actually seeing the fastest rate of growth among our young people in the community, and here it is, a rally specifically focused on that demographic,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, a Democrat, told CNN on Sunday. “Public health professionals in Phoenix are trying to tell young people to take this seriously.”

White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said during a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Tuesday that parts of the U.S. are beginning to see a “disturbing surge” in coronavirus infections.

While New York state is seeing a decline in Covid-19 cases, other states are experiencing a rise in cases that “reflect an increase in community spread,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

“That’s something I’m really quite concerned about,” he said.

The Trump administration has maintained that the Covid-19 response is still a priority.

“It’s why the task force meets regularly, the president is given that information. The vice president has been leading on the task force and the president ultimately makes the decisions and is constantly kept up to date with the latest numbers,” press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said during a briefing Friday.

Isn’t every new case of corona virus a new record high? Enough of this! BOYCOTT NEWS MEDIA and the unnecessary DRAMA!

It’s unfortunate PHX is picking a fight during a crisis with the fed govt when they’ve done so much to help us. Fact: the feds sent PHX $293 million for COVID. PHX squandered it. Very little was used for testing but MILLIONS went to hand outs for arts & liberal activist groups. (Quote from Councilman DiCiccio of Phoenix)

  4. Alonzo Figeroli on November 30, 2020 at 9:35 pm

I’m not denying COVID but I don’t see an over run in hospitals. I personally don’t know anyone that has it.

  5. Courtney Sterling on November 30, 2020 at 9:36 pm

Why the hell is she on here, idiot needs to shut up. And this is all lies not one hospital is full or near full. It’s 120 degrees and what virus would survive. She needs to move to New York and live with Cuomo.

  6. Max Kronader on November 30, 2020 at 9:36 pm

The "wait until it’s safe" virtue signalling d-bags pretend there is no human cost to shut downs. Well, there is. Drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, clinical depression, suicide; they all increase with increased unemployment.
While you people supporting shutdowns are smugly congratulating yourselves on how enlightened you are, your abject terror of a disease with less than a 1% mortality rate is condemning millions to misery and/or death.
    Cowardice has a cost.

How can an unqualified person give medical and Health advice in the USA.
This is illegal in Australia. Only Qualified health care professionals give health and medical advice and messaging.
A failed and incompetent businessman is not qualified to give medical and epidemiological advice.
    Why hasn’t he been charged?
What is the point of study, exams and qualifications in the USA.?

It’s been proven that this virus thrives in closed spaces packed with people. How did they ever think that opening bars, nightclubs, and gyms during a pandemic wouldn’t cause an increase in cases and hospitalizations??? And now the hospital workers have to pay for people’s ignorance. Everyone who goes to bars, gyms, and nightclubs etc. should be required to sign a waiver that they will not seek hospitalization when they get the virus.

  14. Bret Allen on November 30, 2020 at 9:42 pm

So it turns out she was lying all along. Senior healthcare workers are now calling this moron out on her lies. Less politics and more accurate information mayor lady!

Do more testing and isolate those who are sick, and close everything down again or this state willl have many deaths

  17. Liberty Springs on November 30, 2020 at 9:45 pm

Southern states that closed in March were closing when hospitals were empty and we didnt have an outbreak yet. What a waste of those months. Now we have an outbreak but people wont tolerate another lockdown

  20. Howit Starts on November 30, 2020 at 9:49 pm

Hospitals are reporting an increase of patients not covid patients, icu are supposed to operate at 90% for profitability again not full of covid. Testing is up 600% but those sick from covid are down. Many sources say this means covid virus is dying out and we are becoming immune from herd immunity, so why scaring everyone? Isn’t that subversion? Also if my kids aren’t allowed in physical school only online, I want my property taxes reimbursed.

Why are so many people pushing back about wearing a mask and going into public? Other countries have recovered by enforcing this policy…I don’t understand the ignorance.

  25. Delta Breeze on November 30, 2020 at 9:54 pm

Start wearing masks people of AZ. I hate to see this influx of cases happening in my home state. I’m praying for the first responders. A few big wildfires are burning out there also.

  37. Les Fisher on November 30, 2020 at 10:10 pm

COVID-19 is raging in Arizona. Deaths are skyrocketing. This is due to politicians engaging in criminally negligent behavior. I shall elaborate. What follows is bipartisan truth that some of the networks are withholding for political purposes or are unaware of.
As COVID-19 spiked in Phoenix two weeks ago, just down the road from me a Trump rally was held (on June 23rd) during which most of the attendees, including Trump, did not wear masks. The corrupt Arizona Governor (Ducey) was there along with US Senator Martha McSally and US Representative David Schweikert. They were special guests who condoned the rally and should be ashamed of themselves.
In addition, feckless Phoenix Mayor Gallego (shown in video seeming to care) failed to enforce the local law requiring all people to wear masks in public having announced her intention to not enforce the law prior to the rally. She is very much a part of the problem as she shows no leadership and is merely available for patronizing sound bites. She continues to NOT ENFORCE the mask law as she publicly whines about the examples set by others.
The total number of confirmed COVID cases in my zip code (85020) was 221 just prior to the rally. Today, 16 days later, the total number of confirmed cases is 549. So, in just 16 days, we have almost 150% more NEW cases than in the prior 3+ months!!!! In addition, statewide deaths have eclipsed 2000.
Donald Trump, Mike Pence and the aforementioned politicians are killing people. Once again, these politicians are irresponsible people engaging in criminally negligent behavior. They all must be voted out of office.

  38. Arlin Paz on November 30, 2020 at 10:12 pm

Yes !! They open to soon!!!

  42. Laura on November 30, 2020 at 10:17 pm

Do you know what else is common sense? Wearing masks for extended periods of time limits the oxygen to your brain and affects your circulatory system. Some of the side affects are headache, chest pain, loss of hearing. Sound familiar?

  43. Nick Alati on November 30, 2020 at 10:18 pm

Kate is an embarrassment to Arizona and to the United States of America. She’s a liberal idiot with her own agendas.

  50. Gary V on November 30, 2020 at 10:24 pm

That is pretty bad. Didn’t realize AZ was in the worst shape but it doesn’t surprise me since we have incompetent people that are willing to open the gyms and other parts of the country are still on lockdown. Unfortunately I’ve never seen so many ignorant people in my life than in Arizona. I met an idiot the other day who picked me up as a Lyft driver & this moron had the nerve to argue with me about him wearing a mask. He literally did not want to wear it and then he said after the election COVID-19 will just vanish. It’s frightening how many ignorant people exist in Arizona. No wonder why our state is so out of control.
