How to cut the TOP of your own hair with clippers and KEEP IT LONG!!!

In this video I show you how to cut the top of your own hair by picking it up with your fingers and cutting with the clippers. This is a safer technique for self haircutting than using scissors. A correctly aligned clipper blade will not cut skin. I also show another technique and a blending in technique.

Does it matter where you pick up your initial hair (for reference)? Like how about start with the front instead?

Thank you for these videos! You have done an excellent job explaining how a person can cut their hair at home. Not only that, but your videos are simple, clean, to-the-point, and inspiring. I wish you the best as you are doing a very important work!

I use a number 8 open for the top, a number 7 closed around the ridge and then a 4 closed around sides and back. I blend that in with a 4 open and if needed, a 5.

  4. Guy with a Camera on April 12, 2021 at 11:29 pm

Could I use a 4# for the back and sides and cut the top with a 8# and then use this method by going with the grain and using a 4# and at the end use a 3# on the top sides just to take out the bolk and blend them with a down motion? Great video man.

I don’t know if I’m losing my mind or what but I find these videos very soothing lol I just sent for professional clippers and purchased a 2 inch guard … this way I know I won’t go too short. I want to be able to give myself a simple haircut more pixie style than buzzed but I’m all for using a clipper to do this rather than scissors. Thank you Sir you have my sub. :o)

Thank you for this! My boyfriend wants me to cut his hair and his is the same style.

Okay, you’re the man and today’s the day I use your method. Definitely looks better than other ways I’ve tried.

  8. Mike Pryde on April 12, 2021 at 11:32 pm

Great video. You have two methods posted now to cut the top. This one and the one where you comb the hair forward and go with the grain. Is one easier or is one meant for different results?

  9. KissMe on April 12, 2021 at 11:37 pm

Why does your hair have to be parted to the side to cut the top as such ? Couldn’t you just comb it all forward then start trimming it from the back forward ? The reason I ask is when I try to pick up hair from a side part it happens at a 90 degree angle . Maybe my hair isn’t long enough to do what yours does ? And are you choosing that side for a reason versus the other one ? Thanks !

Fantastic videos! So glad I found your channel, been watching to teach myself to do my own hair and for the most part, so far so good! Thanks for this video, cutting the top of your hair. That’s my next "project" as I’ve got way more hair on top and I’m going to give that a go soon ๐Ÿคž.

Thanks again!! Your videos are clear, concise and I love your explanations. Look forward to your next ones & all the best in 2021!!

    Worlds smoothest left hand knuckles.
I tried this and it is spot on! Thank you ๐Ÿ‘Š

  13. Bruce Wayne on April 12, 2021 at 11:46 pm

I appreciate you showing the 2 methods. I’m surprised you were using a #3 on the top vs #4: personal preference? I’ll have to give the comb method another try. I noticed that your hand wasn’t parallel/square to the head when you did the sides but slightly curved, was that correct? I was under the impression you wanted to keep the square going across the top?

And how about when I’m blad how can I do it

  18. KissMe on April 12, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Great Video. 2 Questions. 1. Are you using a " 0 " to trim the top hairs ? Why would you recommend someone to use a clipper over scissors when cutting the top of their own hair ?

  19. stephen gregory on April 12, 2021 at 11:56 pm

Hi, you post great content! Has been very useful these last few weeks. Quick question, I cut my hair with clippers, go to a grade 6 on top. Is there any way to give this a bit of texture or is it too short? Thanks

  20. 1StarProductions on April 12, 2021 at 11:58 pm

I can’t believe I never thought of this. I always struggled with scissors on self-haircuts. Great tip!

Thanks Michael! Great video. I will try that next time I cut my hair. I am thinning on top and anything I can do to keep more of what I have is a win! Have a great 2021

First Happy New Year love your videos. I wear my hair short have 2 cowlicks on crown of head. Can I clip it the way you showed it? Can the lever be set on a longer length?

  26. Roger Melling on April 13, 2021 at 12:03 am

This is excellent can’t wait till the clippers arrive seriously got the worzel gummidge effect going on at the moment lol

  27. J W. on April 13, 2021 at 12:03 am

Luv your vids. They are so helpful during the time of pandemic. If not for these vids, my hair would look like a giant bush. I was wondering is there a way to cut you hair to 1/2" to 1/4" short using only one comb or guard for the whole head and how do you cut cowlicks the bane of my life. Thanks and keep up with the great vids.

  28. Vincent Fernandez on April 13, 2021 at 12:05 am

Looks excellent. Nice job going to try this technique.

  29. Adam Von Feldt on April 13, 2021 at 12:10 am

Thanks for all your videos during the Covid times. Quick question… if I was to use a number 3 guard on sides and the back, what number would be best for blending with the top in the inverted position around the parietal ridge? Sometimes using a 3 I feel is a little more forgiving for any mistakes of blending the top so I sometimes shave my sides with a 2 or 3 depending on how I feel I guess. Thanks again!

  30. Erwin Reyes on April 13, 2021 at 12:11 am

I think this is the best vid so far on how to cut hair on the top. Thanks

  31. RJ Carter on April 13, 2021 at 12:14 am

Nice video for folks but way too much bother for me. I do a #1 top.

  32. KissMe on April 13, 2021 at 12:17 am

Do you have any commentary regarding using clippers on the top of your hair versus scissors ? That could be another video topic ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. Cosens-Prior on April 13, 2021 at 12:17 am

You mention a number 3 guard but in your other video you mentioned mm so I think it would be useful to show that no 3 is 10mm; No 4 is 13mm; no.5 is 16mm; No 6 is 19mm; No 7 is 22mm and lastly no 8 is 25mm. These leave the hair longer the larger the size. Clippers seem to arrive some with the guards quoted as numbers and others as milimeters. I hope that solves the confusion. Another great video thank you.
