I’ll never forget going into a hair salon and asking for layers and the lady saying I shouldn’t put layers on curly hair because it will look funny. I was already so self conscious then and too scared to voice my opinion, that I let her just cut it one length. Never again! I love my curls and needed the volume. I’m embracing them and straightening my hair in almost a year. I love my natural hair and take such good care of it now thanks to you Mel!โค

I would love a full hair make over.

  3. Bryce Davis on May 2, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Hey Mell! I recently got a new stylist they checked all the boxes you discussed but when they went to cut my hair they combed out my curls essentially into a fro. After the cut she washed and dried by hair using a diffuser in an appropriate way, and my curls looked fine. I have never had a stylist do this before. What are your thoughts on this technique?

  4. NYCStreetQueen on May 2, 2021 at 11:54 pm

Lol I went to someone recently to get a curly cut and she straightened my hair haha. It doesn’t look terrible but I do want to get a curly specialist.

  5. Kristen Martin on May 2, 2021 at 11:54 pm

Can you do a video on growing out a cut? Iโ€™ve got a curly shag now thatโ€™s almost shoulder length, and Iโ€™d like to know the best way to grow it out.

  6. Cici Chapman on May 2, 2021 at 11:54 pm

What do I do if there are zero curl experts in my town? :/

  7. Irma Hรฅkansson on May 2, 2021 at 11:58 pm

OMG, I LOVE you, Mell! You always light up my day and make me laugh while giving the most immaculate tips!

  8. Truth Love on May 2, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Is internal layering a big โ€œno noโ€ in your opinion?

  9. Cici Chapman on May 2, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Is them not believing you have naturally curly hair a bad sign?

  10. aikanae1 on May 2, 2021 at 11:59 pm

    I HATE THINNING SHEARS!!!!!!
I think 99 out of 100 hairstylists say they can’t cut my hair without using them. Or short layers. My hair is NOT curlier cut short. I get the blank look. "Of course I can cut wavey/curly hair but I have to do it. Trust me". I have been so traumatized by hairstylists that I’ve worn a ponytail as my ONLY hairstyle for the majority of my adult life. I’m tired of it. I think I can cut my own hair better. I’m about to find out (my hair grows too fast to keep it short). It doesn’t matter if I’m getting a $20 or $200 haircut. I have very very rarely seen a style with my curl pattern to bring in a picture. I want my own style anyway – not someone else’s.

Good Lord. I wish I had a great stylist like you.

  12. Amira Azmy on May 3, 2021 at 12:03 am

could you give us advices for curly hair cut at regular hair salons, incase I don’t have curly hairdresser around ? like what to say , what to be aware of not happening etc.

  13. Helix Jac on May 3, 2021 at 12:04 am

Ok, so my stylist brushes my hair out and then pulls a bottle out of water to get my hair damp. Then she trims about 3 inches off, is that how curly hair is supposed to be cut? Cause I am thinking of switching to someone else since my trims come out uneven and sometimes so do my cuts. Also, I am 15 and was wondering how I could approach this with my mom.

  14. Gauri Ratnaparkhe on May 3, 2021 at 12:05 am

i had a hairstylist tell me my hair is too curly and then continue to put a straightening keratin treatment in without my permission.:)

  15. Angelkate Rose on May 3, 2021 at 12:07 am

OK OK. I’m watching so many of your videos that I should just subscribe.

  16. Sugar Pop on May 3, 2021 at 12:08 am

When you say, go to your stylist with your hair in its "natural state" does that mean nothing in the hair or styled how you usually wear it?

  17. what ever on May 3, 2021 at 12:09 am

My hair really thinned out in the last year (probably bc of my medication) and so not used to seeing my scalp bc used to have really full hair. Soo tomorrow i will probably let my hd cut half of the lengh of. Or at least i am prepared to do that, bc i think my hair needs that to look fuller. But i am so nervous. I have been to this hd before, but only to cut a bit off the ends. She has curls herself, i hope that helps.

  18. Gabriela Saldaรฑa on May 3, 2021 at 12:12 am

Mell – AYUUUDAAA! Just got my hair cut and *whimper* texturized!!! :'( I know what you’re saying, I wish I had see your video before. I asked my hairstylist to bring out my natural wavy texture because the length and weight of it was flattening it out. I definitely lost my waves and now it’s just a big nest of frizz sitting on top of my head. Now my question is, how do you style overly thinned out wavy hair?

  19. Star 123 on May 3, 2021 at 12:13 am

What is the difference between texturizing and layers? And I have heard people say they are getting their hair thinned out. Is that the same thing as texturizing?

  20. Casey Jones on May 3, 2021 at 12:14 am

I complained to a lady who texturized and thinned out my hair. I was so pissed of because I told her no thinning but she did anyways by slide cutting my hair with scissors. I ended up getting my money back. I am traumatized because this is the second time I had a bad experience getting my haircut. The other lady I told off and reported her for ripping my hair with a brush. Did a rush job and barely cut it.

  21. Sam Seeraj on May 3, 2021 at 12:17 am

I have tried for years to find a stylist for my curly hair. I gave up and now i cut my own hair at home. i got tired of them not being able to give me what i want and i also got tired of hearing "well you know its gonna cost extra cause you have curly hair rightt?" …….$70 for a trim on my hair that was BARELY shoulder length….like yea no thanks. i’ll just trim it myself and save money

  22. Pardis B on May 3, 2021 at 12:17 am

I have been getting my hair cut by the same lady for 20 years. I discovered her by chance when I walked into my nearest Supercuts during my first year of college. I simply asked for whoever was available because I had never truly known the value of a good haircut. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I moved back to my hometown immediately after college. And since then I have been making the three-hour trip every six months to sit in that same chair to get that same $15 haircut! I hope I don’t ever move to another state! I don’t know what I would do!

  23. MariaS on May 3, 2021 at 12:18 am

i’m just starting my curly hair journey, after straightening for decades.. thanks for these tips

  24. Mia Garcia on May 3, 2021 at 12:18 am

I wish I would have watched this before I paid $150 for someone to hack my curls off. My thin (like see my scalp thin) curly hair was texturized bro. Fml. At this point, I wish my curls were in the mess it was 4 days ago before I went and got a cut. Lessons learned.

  25. MrsAlchemist on May 3, 2021 at 12:21 am

Thanks for so much info/ there is no stylist in my country (Europe) that cuts curly hair like it should be (in my case dry, I have very fine thin hair, 3a-3b)!! The only โ€žcurl professionalsโ€œ are salons with the โ€žBrian McLeanโ€œ-method but that works only for hair longer than 15cm – and mine is about that so I canโ€™t get that cut. Do you know the โ€žspecial Brian McLean cutโ€œ?? It sounds weird to me cutting every 2.-3. curl shorter..?!

I paid 200 for my daughter to get a devacut and it was horrible. The lady said she was a curl expert but wanted to straighten it first. Then she put in 7 products and it was as hard as a rock

  28. Lyn Doesn't Look Sick on May 3, 2021 at 12:23 am

What drives me nuts is EVERY stylist I go to, after a cut or color, straightens my hair then curls it. It drives me nuts. I wear my hair naturally curly. And I tell them that, but they always think we should not wear our hair natural.

  29. Shhongoddanah on May 3, 2021 at 12:25 am

If my hair wonโ€™t dry will does that mean itโ€™s too moist? I am going to put a protein treatment in it next week because I canโ€™t deal with this anymore ๐Ÿ˜’

  30. Katherine Morgida on May 3, 2021 at 12:26 am

I have a question, I don’t know if you’ll see this but I’d take input from anyone here. Do I go to my haircut with product in? I never skip washing, that’s not going to happen, but do I apply gel before a haircut? I don’t have a lot of definition without product, if I go with totally bare hair, the stylist would not be able to tell I have curly hair. Thank you to anyone who is available to answer!

  31. Blair๐Ÿฆ‹ on May 3, 2021 at 12:26 am

I’m literally in so much stress about my hair…. I live in a country where wavy and curly hair is overlooked and mistreated. When someone has wavy hair, people feel like this person should straighten them for formal events, and it’s frustrating because it’s considered as the "second best"….When someone has curly hair they are most likely considered unlucky and probably not sexy… If you have kinky and coily hair you’re on your own basically…
I hate this about my country and I really feel like there needs to be a change… Hair products are hard to find here for textured hair, or even for any texture, as beauty stores usually sell the really popular brands that are most likely harmful to the hair and not really design for textured hair even if the packaging says otherwise (we all know what brands I’m talking about). In fact, I have never even seen a DevaCurl product in person even when they were really popular… Amazon, E-Bay and other brands that interest me don’t ship to my country and those sites that do ship here dont have the products that I’m looking for. Ive never seen a hair dresser that claims to have researched textured hair even in the slightest, I’ve never been to a hair dresser that knows how to cut my hair, let alone care for it… the things that I’ve been told from hairdressers and dermatologists dont match at all with the things I’ve read and watched and even when I’m trying to do what they advise me I end up with ichy and dry scalp and skin with frizz all over…
And, now that I think about it, I don’t even know what my hair type is because it’s not well cut and not well maintained. I believe I have oily, low density and wavy to curly hair (maybe 2c, 3a), and from what I’ve seen from the Internet I think they are high porosity… I’ve tried a lot of things that I saw from the internet (after doing a lot of research for them obviously). I thought I had a protein overload but a dermatologist told me that I actually need more protein. I’ve never heard from any dermatologist or hair dresser that I should maybe avoid sulfates, parabens, silicones, alcohol… I would try cutting my own hair but hair scissors are so expensive, like 100โ‚ฌ which is around 100$ basically (obviously I live in Europe….), however I bet that even if I used stinky old kitchen scissors I would probably do a better job than those hairdressers… Any family member that I ever had a conversation about hair with thinks I’m wasting my time trying things on my own and thinks that I should just quit the research and let my hair "breath" (no one in my family ever had hair like mine, they were either straight or 2a). I just wish that I could prove them wrong just once but I dont have the proper tools for that… In fact, anyone I had conversations about hair with always ends up telling me the infamous "it’s just hair" "stop taking it so seriously"…
I’ve thought about shaving it all multiple times, it would certainly relieve me from a lot of stares…
I’m about to schedule an appointment with some random hair dresser that I found on the internet (there aren’t any hairdressers specialized in textured hair anywhere near me), I’m about to have my hair cut just below my ears since they aren’t able to grow much further
If someone deals with similar problems, I really wish you the best because I know how frustrating it can be. Thank you Mell for all the information and tips you give us, I love watching these types of videos even if I cant take care of my hair as much as i want to…It still gives me hope!

It’d sad that I’m here although I know for sure there are no experienced hairstylists in my area at all. Finding someone who actually knows how to deal with curly hair is the hardest thing ever.

I’ve been given a mullet!! ๐Ÿ˜” For a long time!!

  34. Julianna Campo on May 3, 2021 at 12:28 am

The last haircut I got, the stylist used thinning shears and now that I am embracing my curls, they look so stringy and separated. I guess I just have to keep growing them out ๐Ÿ™

  35. ILAH Mache on May 3, 2021 at 12:30 am

me: you know how to cut curly hair right?
    hairstylist: yes
also hairstylist: **pulls out straight razor to razor cut it**
me: **jumps up and runs out the door**

  36. a Hoyt on May 3, 2021 at 12:33 am

I am devastated. I don’t know what to do. I assumed the stylist is more knowledgeable. I showed a picture of what I wanted, a beautiful, voluminous, curly bob just below the chin. My hair ended up getting chopped all over to about 2-3" long on various parts of the back of my head, and then it was thinned out w the razor cut. The front looked a lot shorter than the picture but it had been styled w gel and from the front seemed ok. I didn’t see the damage in the back until I felt it while washing and looked on the mirror. It was like concave w almost a short mullet at the nape that almost looks like claws over my neck. The razor cut left all these little pieces that sproing in weird ways all over, and it is so, so short that I can’t tie it or get another cut to fix it. The damage from razors is all the way up. My hair went from curly and bouncy to stiff, ugly, mutilated short hair. I am mortified leaving the house and every time I see or feel it just waves of emotional pain and shock. I don’t know how to live with this.

I’m trying to embrace my curl and living in Germany…. I have a hard time finding the right products here, since I don’t speak German well, I am terrified to go for hair cut cause most of hair salons here are for straight hair..!!!!! Anbody have the same problem or it is just me struggling…..

  38. Lina Ko on May 3, 2021 at 12:37 am

I’m in straight haired Japan and can’t find anyone to do anything with my curls for over a year, and covid won’t let me travel anywhere to do it :'(

  39. Angie CT on May 3, 2021 at 12:37 am

If you live in the middle of nowhere, finding a talented stylist is even harder.

  40. Gold Orchid Bakery on May 3, 2021 at 12:37 am

How do you fix a bad cut? My stylist thinned my hair out, Iโ€™ve had it done before and it never turned out bad but this stylist took out all my volume on my length and left volume up top…. how in the world do you fix this going forward? Chop it off? Cut as it grows out? Any solutions? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  41. M Sammy on May 3, 2021 at 12:38 am

Just got a haircut and I’m so mad. I told my stylist to cut no more than two inches off and to re-layer my hair. Unfortunately, she got "scissor-happy" and cut off more than two inches. She didn’t think it was a big deal because, when my hair is wet, an extra half-inch or inch doesn’t seem that drastic. Dry is a different story. I think she was shocked at how much my curls shrunk up. What’s worse is that she cut the top layers of my hair too short and now they’re barely holding a curl. I keep having to tell myself not to worry and that it’ll grow back ๐Ÿ™

  42. onelovegirly on May 3, 2021 at 12:39 am

I felt attacked with the thinning out comment lol i have wavy hair and like it long. Don’t have high density but it is course so getting lots of layers is key to having volume and wavy definition for me! However, if i get too many layers, my hair looks crazy thick so I’d get it thinned out. I don’t think it ever broke my pattern but it’s been a while since I’ve gotten it thinned out. Tbh i think it actually helped with definition, been thinking about getting it thinned out on my next haircut!

  43. Michelle Spina on May 3, 2021 at 12:40 am

Or at least not a wig๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  44. Lindsey Elevated on May 3, 2021 at 12:40 am

I go to a chain hair cutting place. I go in with my hair already washed and detangled in a braid. I also get a single length hair cut for my curls. And it doesnโ€™t look bad I donโ€™t understand why everyone wants me to get layers. I donโ€™t like having bangs or short pieces. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ itโ€™s also frustrating that people think curls only look best in layers. Iโ€™ve had layers it was frustrating.

I wish i watched this video before getting my haircut 3 days ago i swear its the worst haircut i ever had …its soo bad even tho its a blunt cut…the hairstylist was soo inexperienced…she ended up ruin my hair altogether …i just wish i can get a hair cut by you๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

  50. Andie1204 on May 3, 2021 at 12:51 am

spent 10 years growing out my last bad cut ( she used thinning shears, finally got it decent again but moved cities so had to find a new stylist. When I first walked in she said "I usually cut curly hair when it is straight". I wish I had gone with my gut and walked out because I am now with a damaged cut looking like a mushroom ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ fml.
