I’ve practiced for about 3 or 4 years until I got it right. I will say that it’s definately worth learning to sharpen your knives freehand. I dont regret spending countless hours and hours just learning the angles, how to steady your hands, and most of all listening to the sound of the knife dragging across the stone. Those you have done it for a while will agree that you can tell a lot just by listening to the sound and whether it produces a nice clean sound or a rough one.

mathnerdmon April 12, 2021 at 11:35 pm
hey ive sharpened my knives mainly with the sharpmaker and never purchased a nice benchstone, but would you reccomend possibly using a stone for dull knives than finishing on the sharpmaker, or possibly just the stone. Oh and at the moment between the sharpmaker and strop i can put a pretty nice edge on a blade. Any input would help.
mickstarifyon April 12, 2021 at 11:35 pm
Just buy a cheap one for that specific purpose

But Jeff, I am going to ask the obvious question here: What if you love all of your knives and can’t live with rounding out the edge while practicing your technique to sharpen?

i am finally starting to get the sharpmaker down really well. i use a 0350 and can get to a hair whittling (subjective what hair whittling is) edge with the standard stones not the UFs and no strop.
