πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ "Overcome" – A Barbers Journey from Navy to True North Barber Shop | Phoenix Arizona

Phoenix Barber and Owner of True North Barber Shop, Raymond DeCandia, shares with us his shop and personal journey to becoming a successful barber. Ray’s path was difficult with many struggles along the way that he had to overcome.

His journey from serving in the US Navy to attending cosmetology school where he felt like a fish out of water. From barber college, which was what he truly wanted to do all along, and subsequently getting fired. Ray says it sounds clichΓ©, but the advice he shares is β€œdon’t give up!”

True North Barber Shop was opened in 2017 in the downtown Phoenix Arts District. Ray shows us around his shop which includes a painting by El MoisΓ©s; a vintage cigarette machine repurposed into an art dispenser; an American flag from the USS Missouri; hanging on the side of the lockers is a portrait of Alice Cooper created by Ray’s fiancΓ©e; and you’ll also get a glimpse of a legendary jackalope!

  3. Dee Mcc on December 13, 2020 at 9:43 pm

It sounds more like his comfort level and clicking with coworkers. He had to have skills just finding his own niche. Good luck seems like decent guy. Dee from Ohio . Your better than sleeping pills . Going you on utube last year. Keep up the good work.

I’ve learned that as a shop owner it’s your responsibility to hire for character and to teach skills as time goes. Glad everything worked out for him in the end.

I’m curious. Once a person becomes a barber are they required to cover themselves in tattoos?

I know the storyline of this man. Because I’ve experienced the same thing myself. Even when you make mistakes and others give up on you as long as you don’t give up on yourself you will be successful. Working in construction I’ve been in multiple shops, multiple trades with guys that are not interested in helping you develop your skills. Sometimes the guys that are the hardest on you are the best teachers not because they care but because you learn to be better at whatever it is you do.

There is no better education then the school of hard knocks and life experiences. If one can learn from this it’ll lead them to a world of satisfaction and enjoyment. Thanks for sharing this video Harry, a great one to view.

  29. Daniel Eckler on December 13, 2020 at 10:18 pm

Ray is the man, he has been cutting my hair since i moved to Arizona 5 years ago and i don’t see that changing anytime soon. Awesome seeing an interview like this!

  30. slimshit007 on December 13, 2020 at 10:18 pm

Nice old school barbershop, it takes you back to the 60’S. And It looks more like an European barbershop also.

  31. jor_r on December 13, 2020 at 10:19 pm

I appreciate his honesty. Most of the time you hear people’s success stories but the failure is minimized or removed entirely. It’s pretty inspiring to hear his story.

  32. slimshit007 on December 13, 2020 at 10:20 pm

His story is very inspirational. Barbering is definitely a journey, and there some shop that would break you down and get you unmotivated to keep learning the craft. If anyone going through the same struggle, don’t give up and try going to a different shop where you’ll be more appreciated.

Nice tour of this Shop Harry looking forward to seeing the video of your cut and perhaps more real soon

  42. Mike _72 on December 13, 2020 at 10:31 pm

Love it but on a side note, the quality of the video or what I see is quite poor, a lot of nois, even the filter and coloring is a bit too much. i am missing blacks and contrast. You do not need to do this, its very yellow … I think its unnecessary. Just too much … but great video oberall. Almost a documentary. This could be a start of something … story about barbers, their lives … a secon YT channel maybe? πŸ‘πŸ»
